Only 28% of Construction Firms Use AI for Real Work. Here's How a Lead Gets Ahead.

A new Bluebeam survey of 750 construction managers says only 28% of firms run AI in everyday work. What it means for leads, foremen, and PMs, and how to use it.

Most construction firms are still "testing" AI. The few that use it every day say it saved them over half a million bucks.

What happened

On Oct. 13, Bluebeam put out a survey of 750 US managers at design and construction firms. The survey was done in July 2026.

Here is what they found:

  • Only 28% of firms have AI running in real, everyday work.
  • Just 7% use it across several core jobs.
  • Of the firms that do run it, 40% say AI saved them more than $500,000.
  • 64% of those firms say costs got easier to predict. 58% say they spot problems earlier.
  • Only 2% say not trusting what AI puts out is a big thing holding them back.

So nobody's really asking if AI works anymore. Most outfits just never get it off the test bench. Sound familiar? It's the same as that new app the office rolled out that nobody in the field ever opened.

Why it matters to you

Look at the hiring numbers in the same report:

  • 93% of firms look for digital tool skills when they hire.
  • 77% say that skill is the hardest one to find.
  • 69% look for AI know-how. 59% say it's hard to find.
  • 82% say labor and skill shortages are holding back their jobs.

Read that again. Firms want people who know the work and know the tools. They can't find them.

That could be you. You already know how a pour day goes sideways and what an inspector looks for. Spend ten minutes a day getting good with AI and you've got the combo they're hunting for. No coding. Just real tasks, and you check what comes back.

The firms that got AI into real use said the top reason was it fit into the tools they already had (47%). Same goes for you. Don't go hunting for a new app. Use AI on the paperwork already sitting on your tailgate.

How to use it this week

1. Pick one task and do it every day. Start with the daily report. It's the thing you're writing in the truck at 5:30 when you'd rather be heading home. Dump your rough notes into AI and have it clean them up. Our daily report guide has a prompt you can copy, or use the free Daily Report Builder.

2. Keep a "time saved" note. Jot down how long the task took before and after. After two weeks you have real numbers to show your PM or super. That's how you go from "the guy who messes with ChatGPT" to the lead who gives hours back to the job.

3. Use this prompt to find your next task:

I'm a [trade] [lead/foreman/PM]. Here are the paperwork tasks I do each week: [list them].
Rank them by how much time AI could save me. For each of the top 3, tell me what I'd paste in, what I'd get back, and what I must still check myself.
Don't make up anything about my job. Ask me if you need more info.

4. Follow the rules. Use the tools your company approves. Never paste in client names, contract prices, or private info. Check every word before it goes out under your name.

The bottom line

72% of firms haven't figured this out yet. That's not bad news. It's an opening. The lead who walks into the trailer with two weeks of real time saved is the one who gets looked at for the next step.
