Electrical Awareness
General info only. These talks don't replace your company's safety program, your site rules, or OSHA rules. Follow those first, and ask your safety lead if something here doesn't match.
Start here
You don't have to be an electrician to get shocked. Cords, tools, and overhead lines are around every trade. Here are the basics.
Key points
- Treat every wire as live until it's tested and locked out by a qualified person.
- Check cords and tools before use. Look for cuts, missing ground pins, and taped-up damage.
- Use GFCI protection for tools and cords on site.
- Keep ladders, booms, and long materials away from overhead power lines. Know the clearance rules for your equipment.
- Don't run cords through doorways or under heavy traffic where they get crushed.
- Keep electrical panels clear so they can be reached fast.
- Wet conditions raise the risk. Keep cords and tools out of water.
Bottom line: If you see damaged electrical gear, take it out of service and tell your foreman.
Talk it over
- Are there overhead lines near our work today?
- What do you do with a cord that has a cut in the jacket?
- Where are the GFCIs and panels for our area?
Before you wrap up: have everyone sign the sign-in sheet, write today's date and the topic, and note any questions or hazards the crew brought up. Need a sheet? Use the free toolbox talk template.
